Nights into Dreams[a] is a 1996 action game developed by Sonic Team and published by Sega for the Sega Saturn. The story follows the teenagers Elliot Edwards and Claris Sinclair, who enter Nightopia, a dream world where all dreams take place. With the help of Nights, an exiled "Nightmaren", they begin a journey to stop the evil ruler Wizeman from destroying Nightopia and consequently the real world. Players control Nights flying through Elliot and Claris's dreams to gather enough energy to defeat Wizeman and save Nightopia. The game is presented in 3D and imposes time limits on every level, in which the player must accumulate points to proceed.

One day, Elliot Edwards and Claris Sinclair, two teenagers from the city of Twin Seeds, go through failures. Elliot, a basketball player, is challenged by a group of older students and suffers a humiliating defeat on the court. Claris, a singer, is overcome by stage fright when auditioning for judges, which causes her to lose all hopes of getting the role. When they go to sleep that night, both Elliot and Claris suffer nightmares that replay the events. They escape into Nightopia and find that they both possess the rare Red Ideya of Courage, the only type that Wizeman cannot steal. Elliot and Claris release Nights, who tells them about dreams and Wizeman and his plans; the three begin a journey to stop Wizeman and restore peace to Nightopia. When they defeat Wizeman and Reala, peace is returned to Nightopia and the world of Nightmare is suppressed.

The graphics and flight mechanics were the most praised aspects. Tom Guise of Computer and Video Games said the flight system and freedom were captivating and that Nights into Dreams was the "perfect evolution" of a Sonic game.[19] Scary Larry of GamePro said flying using the analogue joystick "is a breeze" and that the gameplay is fun, enjoyable, and impressive. He gave it a 4.5 out of 5 for graphics and a 5 out of 5 in every other category (sound, control, and FunFactor).[72] Entertainment Weekly said its "graceful acrobatic stunts" offer "a more compelling sensation of soaring than most flight simulators".[64] Edge praised the analogue controller and called the levels "well-designed and graphically unrivaled", but the reviewer expressed disappointment in the limited level count compared to Super Mario 64, and suggested that Nights seemed to prioritise technical achievements and Saturn selling points over gameplay with as clear a focus as Sonic.[59] Martin Robinson from Eurogamer opined that the flight mechanics were a "giddy thrill".[8] Colin Ferris from Game Revolution praised the graphics and speed as breathtaking and awe-inspiring, concluding that it offered the best qualities of the fifth-generation machines.[63] GameFan praised the combination of "lush graphics, amazing music, and totally unique gameplay".[62] Next Generation criticised the speed, saying that the only disappointing aspect was the way "it all rushes by so fast", but the magazine praised the two-player mode and the innovative method of grading the player once they completed a level.[31] Electronic Gaming Monthly's four reviewers were impressed with both the technical aspects and style of the graphics, and said the levels are great fun to explore, though they expressed disappointment that the game was not genuinely 3D and said it did not surpass Super Mario 64.[60]

Reviewers also praised the soundtrack and audio effects. Paul Davies from Computer and Video Games said Nights had "the best music ever"; in the same review, Tom Guise said it created a hypnotically magical atmosphere.[19] Ferris said that the music and sound effects were that of a dream world, and asserted that they were fitting for a game like Nights into Dreams.[63] IGN's Buchanan praised the soundtrack and that the sound effects "fit in perfectly with the dream universe".[10]

NiGHTS into Dreams..., or Nights into Dreams, is an action video game developed by Sonic Team and published by Sega originally for the Sega Saturn in 1996. The game follows the story of Elliot Edwards and Claris Sinclair, two teenagers from the city of Twin Seeds who are sent to the world of dreams Nightopia, where they are aided by a being called NiGHTS.

When humans go to sleep, they are transported to the Night Dimension, a magical dimension divided into two types of locations, the world of dreams, known as Nightopia and the world of the nightmares, know as Nightmare.

In the Waking World, a boy called Elliot Edwards and a girl called Claris Sinclair had a rough day. Elliot was playing basketball with his friends and showing off his good moves when a crowd of High School students rush into their game, challenge and defeat Elliot at his favorite hobby, then bully and laugh at him, making Elliot feels really embarassed in front of his friends. [1]Claris auditioned for the headlining musical for the Twin Seeds centennial commemoration celebrations to prove her family of artists that she inherited their talent, however, she heard a voice inside saying that the judges are gonna laugh at her, making her afraid of the judges.[1] During their sleep, a Nightopian appears in their dreams and begs them to save the world of dreams from Wizeman with the help of NiGHTS.[1] A request which they accept.[1] Elliot and Claris eventually learn that they have a rare red colored Ideya known as "The Red Ideya of Courage", which is the most powerful Ideya, and due to its power, only the most powerful Nightmarens can steal it.[1][3]

NiGHTS into Dreams was acclaimed mainly for its graphics and flight mechanics.[14] The video game magazine Computer and Video Games gave the game five stars, claiming that NiGHTS was a revolutionary experience with the best video game music of all time and calling NiGHTS the perfect evolution of Sonic.[14][15] Edge magazine gave the game an 8/10, praising its level design and graphics, but criticizing it for being to short compared to competitor Super Mario 64.[16][14] On GameRankings, NiGHTS into Dreams had an average score of 89% at based on an aggregate of nine reviews.[14]

Right, I have the Perfect Album btw The original release from back when (available on this site) has the uncompressed level musics in their basic form, this one has all the mixes, but they're pretty much the 'game versions' if you will. It still doesn't really reflect the PS2 release though, and although the Sonic into dreams music is on the disc that doesn't mean anything about the content of the PS2 version of the game.

The book would later be reprinted in 2008 and sold with the PS2 re-release of NiGHTS. The book was never translated into English, though TRiPPY over at nightsintodreams.com was able to get a fan translation done, which you can find here.

Got a late start out of Whitney Portal with my brother Mark. We ran into some ice high up and ended up getting benighted above 13000 feet without bivy gear. One of the longest nights in recent memory. 2ff7e9595c
